Mental Health Month: Press Conference, Weekend Events for Young Children & More

Updated: May 12, 2022

NORWALK DECLARES MENTAL HEALTH MONTH:

It was great to see the City, Schools and community nonprofits come together today, May 12th, to recognize May as Mental Health Awareness Month--including an official proclamation by the Mayor! We're so grateful to our media volunteer, Katie Gallo, a Norwalk resident and small business owner, for sharing her mental health journey.

If you missed her, plan to attend one of the two "In Our Own Voice" presentations she will do along with Don Fisher of NAMI CT at the Norwalk Public Library this month. (See flyer below.) It's a great presentation that fights stigma, shares insights, and allows for discussion.

NATIONAL PREVENTION WEEK:

We're wrapping up National Prevention Week (NPW) with a couple of free trainings to ensure that ALL of us are equipped to help someone in need. YOU could be the one to save a life--are you ready?

  • Free Question-Persuade-Refer (QPR) suicide prevention training at Norwalk City Hall (Friday, 5/13/22, 12-1:30pm). Can't make it? There are other options online this month; visit our Events Page for details.

  • Free opioids/Narcan training on Monday the 23rd at noon at City Hall. RSVP here.

WEEKEND FUN FOR LITTLE KIDS:

On Saturday (5/14) starting at 10am, bring your kids to the Discovery Museum in Bridgeport for the statewide NPW event. Lots of fun and resources! For FREE TICKETS, email Giovanna at gmozzo@thehubct.org.

Also on Saturday, bring your kids to the Norwalk Public Library for a read-aloud in English and Spanish of Gizmo's Pawesome Guide to Mental Health. Kids will get a free copy of this wonderful book featuring Gizmo, the therapy dog!

  • At the Main Library (1 Belden Ave) at 12:00 PM

  • At the South Norwalk Branch Library at 2:00 PM.

NEXT WEEK'S TRAININGS:

The Triangle Community Center and Norwalk ACTS will be hosting an LGBTQ+ 101 training for the general public, especially anyone who works with youth, on Monday, May 16th. It will be held in the Community Room, Norwalk City Hall from 11:00 AM-12:30 PM. Please Register Here

Want to hear about mental health journeys from local residents who have learned how to cope? Attend the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI)'s "In Our Own Voice" event featuring two guest speakers, one being TNP's volunteer media specialist, Katie Gallo. Please RSVP at (203)899-2780

  • On May 19th from 6 PM-7 PM at the Norwalk Library main branch

  • On May 24th from 6-7pm at the SoNo branch.

Come out for NorWALK for Mental Health awareness event and wellness fair! Our big mental health & prevention event will now take place Saturday, 5/21 at the Town Green from 9:00 AM - 11:30 AM! (No rain allowed this time!)
